so how much longer until HDD prices have come back to pre-Thailand flood levels? by hardwarequestionsin hardware

[–]veoeluz 2 points3 points ago

They'll have to come down eventually. I know for enterprise operations, they can't really make this choice, but I've not purchased a new drive for over a year because of all this, and I wont.

If that means I have to break my array and go back to a few single drives, then I will. Either that or buy used. $60 per TB was too high for me back when it was cheap. No way I'm going to pay more than that per TB.

Except that most employers have a policy about vacation time and working before and after it (like holidays). They could try to not pay you for your vacation time (if it was a paid vacation).

If it wasn't paid vacation time, then meh, but if it was, you're just asking for them to screw with you.

As of 4/30/12, the Federal reserve posted the currency component of M1 (which is the money in circulation outside of the federal reserve) as just over $1T. There are other components to M1 as well, but just looking at the currency component, let's do a little math.

Let's make an outrageous assumption and assume half of that money is being held in personal or business savings. Obviously this is not the case, but let's continue - the other half of that money ($500B) is in circulation going from one place to the next. If that money is taxed at just 1% on each transaction (a flat tax) without exceptions without loopholes, you'll end up with $5B of tax revenue. No refunds to give people, no great expense on auditing or figuring out who owes what.

As of 2011, the IRS reported a net collections of just shy of $2B.

name calling?

Maybe it shouldn't be called a contract, but rather the group of laws that currently dictate (in your state) what happens during a divorce, what happens to children of widows or children in a divorce, next of kin laws, inheritance laws, etc.

All these laws that provide a baseline for what would be included in a marriage contract.

And please, don't call people names when they are just trying to have a conversation. I'm not interested in hurling insults.

I'll try to explain my position with an analogy.. do you have to get a license to get a job at walmart? No, you simply sign an employment contract with them and fulfill the requirements of that contact. you now carry the status of "employed."

What happens if either party does not fulfil their end of the contract? The result is usually laid out in the terms of the contract, but if it cannot be settled, it is taken to court.

Is it not possible to conduct marriage in the very same manner?

edit: fixed some typos.

Contract law exists in and of itself outside of the marriage license structure. As does the court system. I'm not sure why you're confusing the two. You don't have to go to the government to get a license to form a contract with anyone else, why should you have to do it to get married?

As far as I'm concerned, the government's only responsibility with regard to contracts between two individuals is upholding contract law and providing a court system for disputes. We don't need to go to the government to ask permission to form a contract, and they certainly don't need to dictate to us the terms of the contract.

Why not simplify the tax code, and just institute a flat tax instead? how about a 1-5% flat tax for everyone on all transactions with no exemptions? That would bring in more money than the current IRS structure and it would mean the average working american going from paying a tax rate of 15-35% of their income to much much less.

I agree - there are a few more pressing issues, but the underlying disease that is causing these issues is that government feels the need to seek control over every facet of our lives, both domestically and everywhere else in the world. Let's get them in line!

Here's an idea - let the state provide individuals who wish to marry the resource of a baseline contract that would include all of the parameters for the situations you described. You could add or subtract from it, alter it to how you see fit.

The contract would be notarized, and a witness would be present at the notarization.

Why do we need the state government's permission to be married? We can do all this on our own between the parties interested in getting married.

As far as the federal government's concerned: 1. as far as benefits go, stop giving them to specific groups of people that agree with your moral standard. 2. Stop trying to legislating morality. There is no constitutional authority for the federal government to dictate who can and cannot wed. Stop using the issue of gay marriage as a political tool to garner favor for political elections.

Could none of those situations be taken into consideration when putting together a marriage contract upheld by contract law?

The state could even provide a baseline contract that could be edited to each couple's desires, so you wouldn't have to write the whole thing out yourself.

I just don't like having to ask for permission by the state to marry.

Thats what i do now (just mow). I dont really care about my lawn. it looks fine when mowed, i just hate the weeds. But not enough to spend money on them really. Just thought I'd ask around and see what people think about certain weed killers! Thanks for the input!

  1. would people not like a much simpler tax code with an overall lowered tax rate, instead of filling the tax code with tons of loopholes that you have to dig around for to find?

  2. Couldn't a simple contract agreed upon through contract law determine rights of succession and inheritence? Or property issues that arise in issues like divorce?

Well, I'm looking at it this way - gay marriage rights or polygamist marriage rights or whatever, should be able to be done without the government's permission. I really don't think it has to be complicated at all. The state could provide a baseline agreement as a resource that any couple could use as an marriage contract. Take it or leave it. Add to it, or subtract from it what you wish. Make your marriage contract reflect what you actually want in a marriage contract.

I'm not proposing that every single marriage contract start from scratch. Their definately could be some resources offered to the public to help them make this decision, but it also should be a decision not entered into lightly. Maybe having a marriage contract instead of a license will make people think more carefully about getting married, and who they're getting married to. Just my two cents.

Then use the standard marriage contracts as you baseline for your own?

Edit: I'm not trying to make anyone irate, I just wanted to have a discussion.
