It turned out to be quite difficult for her to apply for permanent residence (or citizenship later on), precisely because she entered the country on a student visa. There's something in the fine print (or not so fine print) that says you'll leave the country within a certain time once you've completed your studies. I wouldn't worry about that yet, though. You'll have plenty of time to start out working part-time, then perhaps get a firm job offer at the end of your studies. If a local company sponsors your visa (especially in a high-tech industry) you'll have no problem staying on.
