Your opinion about alternative ways to treat cancer, and is it helped anybody?

socket0 0 points1 point 6 minutes ago[-]

Asking whether anyone has been helped by a treatment (alternative or conventional) will mislead you. This is anecdotal evidence, and depends purely on someone's possibly incorrect perceptions.

I have an uncomfortable bed in my guest bedroom, so my mother in law doesn't come to visit often. On the other hand, my mother in law lives thousands of miles from me and I'm a bit of a dick to her, so I'm probably wrong in thinking the uncomfortable bed trick works.

The correct way of determining whether a remedy works is through the scientific method, which has nothing to do with "the man" or the influence of pharmaceutical companies.

If you think rainbows can treat a specific type of cancer, you start by treating some patients with real rainbows, and some patients with a synthetic refracted light substitute. You don't know which is which, so you can't tip off the patients and allow the placebo effect to kick in.

After the full course of treatment, you examine the patients to see whether any of them benefited from the treatment. If both groups of patients, those treated with real rainbows and those treated with the substitute, had similar responses, rainbows are not an effective treatment for cancer.

If, on the other hand, the people treated with real rainbows show a better rate of recovery than those who weren't treated with rainbows, we can be reasonably confident that rainbows deserve a closer look as potential cancer treatment.

At this point, the pharmaceutical companies will be all over rainbows, seeking to extract the active ingredient that's helping the cancer patients. This is why folk remedies and alternative treatments do not work. If they did, any of thousands of research facilities would be rushing to extract, refine and patent the treatment. Researchers at these facilities, and tens of thousands of academics all over the world, would be getting articles published in the top medical journals.

tl;dr: If it worked, it can be proven to work, beyond argument, and will no longer be "alternative".

Does anybody know how much (if any) of Jesus's life was recorded by first hand observers?

socket0 2 points3 points 18 hours ago[-]

Wouldn't the mainstream of Bible scholars be skewed towards believers? I've heard a lot of academics in related disciplines question the historicity of Jesus, although mainly in the context of television documentaries and magazine articles.

From the Wikipedia article:

Some writers [...] question whether Jesus ever existed, and whether attempts to use the Gospels to reconstruct his life give the Gospels too much credit. This position [...] is very rare among Bible scholars.

Perhaps it's a more common view among academics in related disciplines, such as archaeology?

The powerful transvestite lobby is downvoting you. Damn you transvestite lobby and your hidden agendas!

Dear Stephen Hawking, I appreciate your freedom to say religion and philosophy are redundant, but amongst they general public it's reinforcing the kind of negative scientist stereotypes that I spend a lot of time trying to disprove.

socket0 3 points4 points 23 hours ago[-]

On the other hand, perhaps the tendency of well educated people in the public eye to not openly doubt religion is reinforcing dubious belief systems. Perhaps if more high profile scientists would publicly (and politely) voice their doubts about religion or bunk science, this would lead to more people who have doubts to develop an interest in the scientific community.

Should we request imgur to tineye uploaded images? Just like reddit search leads to the submission page when a link is not found?

Maybe they'll go for a fair offer: unlimited searches in exchange for a dozen bags of beef jerky and reddit Gold membership for all TinEye admins.

socket0 1 point2 points 1 day ago[-]

The idea is good, but this would place a huge load on TinEye, in exchange for zero ads being displayed. I'm not sure how many images imgur processes per day, but the number is sure to be significant. TinEye won't like that.

Worst top 100 list ever.

socket0 1 point2 points 1 day ago[-]

Top 100 lists are a bad idea, anyway. I enjoy them, don't get me wrong, like deep-fried bacon-flavoured corn syrup porn, but they're so subjective that any list but my list is sure to be infuriating. And that's before factoring in the cluelessness of the list compiler or the senselessness of the premise of the list.

Police raid the Pirate Bay's and Wikileaks' ISP, 7 persons detained

socket0 1 point2 points 1 day ago[-]

The Belgian government is pissed at Wikileaks for publishing confidential court files related to the Dutroux paedophile case. In particular, court documents (falsely) linking one of the most prominent Belgian politicians to homosexual paedophilia. The timing of this raid and the particular mention of Belgian authorities could be a coincidence, but I would be surprised.

Just a Friendly Reminder That You Don't Really Own Your Kindle Books: Woman Locked Out of Her Kindle, Gets Nowhere After a Month and 20 emails

People tend not to mind things they're oblivious about. DRM can be an invisible layer 90% of the time, so 90% of people might not care about it. Perhaps the rest of us are just worrying about nothing, but I do care about what happens to my purchases should the DRM operator go out of business or stop supporting the DRM mechanism. Sure, my DVD backups will probably degrade long before Amazon stops supporting Kindle e-books, but I would still like to know I can access my books decades from now.

marketing spam

Anyone using a link shortener like wp.me should be considered a suspected spammer by default. Or perhaps reddit can automatically expand shortened links to their original state? This would make it much easier to spot the suspicious content at a glance.

Three in particular by French director Jacques Tati:

  • Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (1953)
  • Mon Oncle (1958)
  • Playtime (1967)

Absolute classics.

I am 24 and planning on getting circumcised. Has anyone else had it done later in life? Tell me about it. Will I die?

socket0 0 points1 point 13 days ago[-]

Still won't get him into Heaven, but might ward off evil spirits then. Lots of cultures practice circumcision for a variety of laughable reasons, but none of them for reasons that don't qualify as superstitious or borderline insane.

socket0 18 points19 points 13 days ago[-]

Unless there's a real medical reason for doing this, I would strongly advise against it. It won't attract women, it won't ward off evil spirits, and it won't get you into Heaven. All you're doing is going through unnecessary, painful and potentially dangerous surgery to make your penis shorter. And possibly less sensitive, depending on who you ask.

Lead, through the alchemical action of gunpowder or some other propellant, appears to be quite easily absorbed through the skin. This has been experimentally confirmed by Dr Samuel Colt, an excellent inventor of lead dispersal devices.

You're about as likely to get raped or killed in Cape Town itself as you are in any major city in the world. Violent crime associated with Cape Town more often than not takes place outside of Cape Town, in the sprawling slums and gang-controlled suburbs outside of the city.

Apparently everybody you ever met from South Africa didn't include South Africans who actually knew their way around South Africa?
