r/anxiety, let's look on the positive side: what are some of your coping strategies that help when you're panicking? by throwthisawayawaywooin Anxiety

[–]shallah 1 point2 points ago

breathing deep into the belly then paying detailed attention to items around me naming them to myself - desk, keyboard, coaster, cd; naming sounds - whirring of discdrive and computer fan; noting and naming touch sensations - keys of the kyboard, where the chair touches my body, feeling of my clothing, wiggle toes and feel shoes & socks and imagine roots going into the earth like I'm a tree - keep deep breathing, keep noticing and naming things to myself when anxious thought intrudes gently redirect my monkey mind back to breathing in 2 3 4 out 2 3 4, back to noticing details. When that is not enough go to happy memory in similar detail such as hugging my cat - the vibration and sound of the purr, softness of fur and how it tickles my nose, variations in color of the fur, warmth of the body, firmness of the muscles, the vertebrate of the spine, feeling my love for my cat and feeling loved and trusted in return and how that feels in my heart.

the sooner I start the self calming techniques when anxiety is just starting to raise up even 1% if I can catch it helps. The more I have practiced these over the past year the better they work at reducing and even prventing panic attacks and reducing nervous stomach cramps.. still doesn't stop anxiety but reduces it a few degrees and since it gives me some control for the first time in my life it is freaking wonderful. at first it only helped a little with big triggers and I noticed progress faster with the small triggers. If I at least did some breathing and some quick noticing of my surroundings (instead of trying for tunnel vision hoping vainly to block panic that failed me for so many years) when my anxiety level went up even a tiny amount, just starting to get more nervous, it helped more and since I am constantly nervous I have lots to practice on. the more I practiced the better it was at helping me over all. it helped to use it when getting say anxious watching a sitcom where a character embarasses him/herself and I feel so badly for them I have to fast forward or even stop the show or scared for a character in an action movie dangling off a side of a bilding even told myself it is fak they are wearing a safety cable

silly isn't it? this is actually a minor anxiety for me over all so i can step back easier and look at it and say, yep, definite cognitive distortion here. and yep it would be funny to have a sitcom character with it.

i think I will categorize this in myself in the excessive guilt niche like when given an ugly or seriously unsuitable gift I can never say so, stick in the closet for 5 or more years and then give it to a thrift store when the guilt wears off enough.

I used to tell people my mind ran away with me dragging me kicking and screaming after it. Like the dog in UP! - he sees and squirrel and he can't help but react.

these days I ask people if they have any phobias - needles, big dogs, tiny spaces, spiders, snakes etc. and try to get them to see that their phobia is like mine only theirs is easier to avoid so they life is thankfully less limited. And like their own brain's automatic reaction to the fear stimulus is not to be reasoned with by just saying stop feeling fearful neither is my anxiety calmed down by just reasoning. it is surprising how many people have things they are afraid of but won't call it fear or phobia - they just don't care for it and some think their's rational unlike mine.

possible displaced anxiety? Any stressors in your life right now hard to deal with so it gets put instead on the comparatively minor guilty feeling triggered by that thought? sometimes I get agitated over totally unrelated things when I am really fearful over something like my 90+ Grandmother having a badly infect cut and then getting more wound up than usual over other stuff.

another thought - did you get guilt tripped as a kid by any authority figure over having something nicer than the average person or anything similar at all? sometimes current excessive emotional reactions (even taking into account anxiety disorder) can be from similar past event where someone picked on you as a child for that same thing. Same as certain tones of voice or ways of phrasing things can trigger excessive emotional reaction in me because it reminded me, once I had time to stop and think back, of someone who verbally abused me.

I take it to make me capable of sleep. too sedating for day time except in tiny amounts. too much unpleasantness in my life is unavoidable so I don't torture my taste buds with things I don't need to and do mindfulness with pleasant things. and I do mindfulness with the unavoidable unpleasant things like anxiety, panic, depression, other unpleasant emotion and their associated physical effects. put my mind in the painful spots and try to relax mentally/emotionally/physically around it instead of trying to block it or wallow, observe it, observe the stream of thoughts and associated emotions, try have compassion for myself like I would for a friend experiencing the same...

it is pretty retch worthy yet that is what the herbalists say shows it's a good batch. thankfully it does not repeat on me like fish oils and some b-complex brands do.

you can sunburn easier is the only effect I know of other than what possible serotonin syndrome when taken with SSRI's. similarly if you try adding on other otc serotonin boosters there can be effects. I can't thank l-theanine (an amino acid found in green tea) with st. john's wort myself. I feel good for 30-60 minutes and then I feel spacy weird. Others can do both but I cannot. Likewise I had major anxiety attack that lasted hours after trying part of a 5-htp capsule without stopping st john's wort. I never found anyone reporting that effect when looking at medical sites or general internet discussion and usually the google does not fail me like that. and in my case the wort does me good for depression but not noticeably effect my anxiety but I have had it since I can remember plus family history so it could be just me.

one more tip - look for a brand with standardized extract. there are a few different plant chemicals that people look for in sjw and some report better effects with one sort or the other. I have only used the more common Hypericin (0.3%) to good effect on depression. and if you have any allergies check the inactive ingredients before buying to ensure no reactions to fillers.

Montana Marijuana repeal sponsor says he'd do it again: He also received boos when he said he said he did not know whether a cancer patient depicted in the film should have access to mmj by shallahin politics

[–]shallah[S] 0 points1 point ago

quotes:

Milburn made his comments after participating in a panel discussion along with medical marijuana advocates and opponents, following a Helena screening of the film "The Code of the West" that documented last year's legislative debate.

The Cascade Republican was met by a hostile crowd of marijuana advocates in the audience who heckled him when he declined to disclose the source for his assertion that schoolchildren were "pimping" themselves out for marijuana. He also received boos when he said he said he did not know whether a cancer patient depicted in the film should have access to medical marijuana.

Milburn was unapologetic in the face of the chilly reception. He said he only learned prior to the 2011 legislative session how out of control the marijuana industry had become in the state and that groups he met with told him the drug was reaching schools.

He said he decided to open negotiations from a position of strength by backing a total repeal, and the end result was severely restricted medical marijuana providers from selling their product, tightened the qualifications to register as a medical marijuana user and increased the regulation over doctors who recommend medical marijuana for their patients.

Cannabis: Potent Anti-depressant In Low Doses, Worsens Depression At High Doses - "a synthetic form of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, is an effective anti-depressant at low doses" by shallahin MMJ

[–]shallah[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry about the misleading title but that is what the article gave me so I added the quote pointing out the study was with synthetic. I found this looking for information on mmj strains that do not exacerbate existing anxiety and/or depression while treating pain, muscle spasm, etc. - or better yet relieve anxiety/depression as well.

herniated discs and a ruptured disc...and my dr says to take aleve? by lizzzellzzzin ChronicPain

[–]shallah 0 points1 point ago

ice is under rated -

http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/tc/herniated-disc-home-treatment

Take pain medicine if needed, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or medicines that reduce pain, swelling, and irritation, including ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) or naproxen (such as Aleve). These medicines usually work best if you take them on a regular schedule instead of waiting until the pain is severe.

(I once read of the pain cycle that meds take time to take effect so when using don't wait for pain to recur but take on a schedule so the pain doesn't come back or at least stays reduced period.

Try heat or ice. Try using a heating pad on a low or medium setting for 15 to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. Try a warm shower in place of one session with the heating pad. Or you can buy single-use heat wraps that last up to 8 hours. You can also try an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. You can use an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a thin towel. There is not strong evidence that either heat or ice will help, but you can try them to see if they help. You may also want to try switching between heat and cold.

I get the $2 reusable hot cold packs at wally world, freeze it for ice or nuke it for heat and stick it in a pillow case wrapped a few times and apply to painful area. I like to use a little heat to unkink the muscles the follow with ice to chill the pain. Too much heat for me makes me too flexible or something so my neck pops more and my low back is easier to aggravate. your mileage may vary so try to find what suits your body best. also if you use topicals like capsacin, lidocane, camphor, or one of the minty ones (methyl something) you can't use heat after or you can burn and also absorb too much esp with the lidocane. If you use heat use the heat first then later apply your topical.

My mother has multiple ruptured discs in her back so her doc sent her to a specialist who thankfully wasn't gungho on surgery as she knows several people who are the same or worse after surgery. He said most people get better in about 6 months with PT, ice, nsaid and maybe a muscle relaxant. Not the same before the injury but much less or even no pain. In her case this was true if she iced several times a day like first thing in the morning on the way to work, lunchtime (there is a fridge at work she could refreeze the pack) and maybe on the way home and later before bed. the prescribed muslce relaxant was too strong for her so she feared driving so she checked with the doctor and pharmacist and once she found it was not time released or anything like that cut it into quarters taking 1/4 during the day at the prescribed intervals and 1/2 or a whole pill only before bedtime.
