i think some may be confusing dark movies with bleak movies, though they aren't necessarily the same thing.

definitely On The Beach (1959) with Gregory Peck. During the entire movie, there is just no hope whatsoever - the definition of bleak. Check it out.

This is a great example of beautiful Art Nouveau, a very different aesthetic from the "minimalist" movie posters of late. My hat's off.

I couldn't watch till the end (one of the few movies I haven't watched all the way through). For how "true to life" everyone (including hits makers) proclaimed this movie to be, I thought it was completely unrealistic - the way the main character was allowed to behave like he did, which is a huge component of the movie. The reason the military works is because there is deference to authority, chain of command, etc. This guy would never have been tolerated. (Now if it hadn't been touted as sooo realistic, I could have forgiven it that, but I still would have been bored with the film).

Wasn't Christian Bale one of the main stars in that movie? I guess the way OP words the question, it's subjective.

What would you say was his least voyeuristic (and thus, least Hitchcockian?) film? ...His most voyeuristic would have to be Rear Window, hands down.
