While I don't agree it's OK to vandalize a Bible, he is correct that the Gideons want you to take home the Bible. Gideons go all over passing out Bibles, they even came to my elementary school in the early 80s. In the presentation the they gave, they said they leave Bibles all sorts of places, like hotel rooms, hoping people will keep them.

Just remember the Gideon's Bible is slightly different from a standard Bible.

It looks like it might be from the Batman: Gotham Knight anime film.

I can't remember. I remember crawling forums and trying about a dozen different things, a few of them involving router settings. If that was one of the common fixes, I probably tried it.

I've never played BF3 with anyone inside this house, so I can't speak to it. Have you ever tried BF Heroes or BF Play4Free? Both of those games are unplayable from 2 PCs on the same map at my house. Back when I looked into it, it was a known issue with no real workaround.
Perhaps it's improved for BF3 and they use a version of PB that is less sophisticated for their less sophisticated games, but I have no idea.

I like how they don't even own "punkbuster.com" but some obscure, unrelated (as far as anyone looking for "punkbuster knows)" evenbalance nonsense.
PB is such a gigantic piece of shit. It is literally the bane of my gaming experience. My son loves Battlefield Heroes, and I like to play with him. Problem is, PB kicks us from every single game if we try to play the same map. In fact, in every game I've played that uses PB, two people in the same house can't play the same map without getting kicked.
I've never been falsely kicked for cheating by VAC or Warden. Why in the shit some game companies still use PB knowing how awful it is is beyond me.
I remember when the guy who was one of the people reworking the failed APB: Reloaded to go free to play. He mentioned it was going to use PB, and when asked why, he admitted it was terrible, yet PB offered them the best deal. I knew in that moment what to expect as far as quality from a f2p APB.
Punkbuster is severely broken. It constantly kicks legitimate players and is blind to actual cheaters. Just google "punkbuster error". There are over 1 million results. Every game that uses it has page after page of forum thread of people with PB issues and are unable to play.

I don't know. I'm just speaking about people I've met in general. The only person I know who watches GoT is my sister, and I don't talk with her much about the sex.

Are there any cases of suicide in any living organism other than humans? and is there any scientific/evolutionary reason it occurs in humans? by mokimadnessin askscience

[–]nitesmoke 3 points4 points ago

And does anyone have any actual sources of dolphins killing themselves outside of this film?

it is revealed that dolphins are constantly being replaced at Sea World because they keep committing suicide.

Revealed by whom? Is there any links to this?

Because, unlike humans, every breath a dolphin takes is a conscious effort.

Where is the source for this? Are you a marine biologist? I'm not saying it isn't true, but I'd like to hear a better explanation.
I'm sorry, but this comment sounds very hyperbolic and non-scientific.

I'm really not trying to sound anti-dolphin, I love them. But I've been burned in the past by liberal "documentaries".

ASoIaF is heavily based off of The War of the Roses, which happened in the real world in the middle ages, hence the similar cultures and level of technologies.

Do people really want to watch an hour of television just for two or three minutes of explicit sex? Don't people watch the show because it's a really great show?

All my life I have heard my friends say that crap music, movies, TV, whatever, is awesome as long as it has enough sex in it. I remember having a conversation with my Navy buddies back in '98 or so. There was a group of 5 or 6 dudes who would get together each week to watch the new Baywatch. Now, this was the #1 show in the world at that time, yet it was pretty terrible. They all liked it for the same reason: the boobs.
Whatever medium, sex sells. Look at the stupid "reply girls" from youtube. They literally do nothing but push their cleavage into the camera while they say a couple of generic sentences and get millions of views. They don't even show nipple.
So to answer your question, yes, there is a huge segment of the population who will watch the worst TV show or movie and listen to music they hate, as long as there's some tits in it.

There was nothing "misleading" about his point. He was completely right that AC was dangerous. It is dangerous. Hundreds of people die each year of electrocutions. Very few, if any, of those deaths are from DC.

Where is this from? It's no in The Hobbit, but is the same style of production, but it doesn't look the same as the animated LoTR either.

It's much more likely that it was a coincidence helped by the fact that they were at a Butterfly farm where the Butterflies are landing all over everyone.

How accurate are the bootcamp scenes in Full Metal Jacket (1987)? by MFTerroristin AskHistory

[–]nitesmoke 7 points8 points ago

Fairly accurate. R. Lee Ermey was an actual marines boot camp instructor. He "wrote" all his own lines. From imdb:

According to director John Boorman, Stanley Kubrick wanted to cast Bill McKinney in the role of Gunnery Sgt. Hartman. However, Kubrick was so unsettled after viewing McKinney's performance in Deliverance that he declined to meet with him, saying he was simply too frightened at the idea of being in McKinney's presence. Kubrick then hired Tim Colceri to play Hartman. Colceri never got to play the role, as former US Marine Corps Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey, consultant for the Marine Corps boot camp portion of the film, performed a demonstration on videotape in which he yelled obscene insults and abuse for 15 minutes without stopping, repeating himself or even flinching - despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. Stanley Kubrick was so impressed that he cast Ermey as Hartman. Colceri was bitter but accepted Kubrick's consolation prize of a small role as a helicopter door-gunner.

These days they treated us a bit less harsh and much more politically correct. But it still is the same in many ways. Now there's women as well. I'd say it's about as accurate as any other film version I've seen. But it was much more grim in the movie. Of course, I hadn't been drafted and had volunteered in peace time, but we goofed off a lot more than was shown in the movie. There were lot's of harmless pranks, and little of the "soap party" parts.

With a few exceptions, this season of TV is over. Who had the best season? by Pudiein television

[–]nitesmoke 0 points1 point ago

I'll give you that. That's what I meant by the filler episodes part. Some episodes are so uneventful they could be cut entirely and would remind you of the deleted scenes on DVDs.
But when it's good, it's great. I feel like the good parts outweigh the bad. Then again, I have lots of free time with little to do, so it's not like I have to miss anything else to watch Walking Dead.

With a few exceptions, this season of TV is over. Who had the best season? by Pudiein television

[–]nitesmoke 9 points10 points ago

  • SciFi: Fringe. After a slow 4th season start, Fringe blew our minds with an incredible second half of the season. It was renewed and will get one more season to tie things together.

  • Mystery: Sherlock. The BBCs new take on Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch as the eccentric Holmes is brilliant. Each episode is as long as a movie and this allows for some great pacing.

  • Drama: Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. Both adaptations are spot-on and perfectly acted. It's hard to pick a favorite but if pressed, I'd go with GoT if only for their lack of filler episodes compared to WD.
