For what it's worth, this is perfectly suited for vector graphics. I'm not an SVG whiz, though....

This is an excellent description, but it's unrelated to atheism.

See the sidebar: "not blogspam, an image, video or an infographic."

You've got a great image though and it should get some attention at /r/pics--keep up the good work!

Would we be able to think without knowing any languages? by xX5xin AskReddit

[–]koavf 0 points1 point ago

Essentially, at the rudimentary level, animals (or people) without language have no symbology to represent things they cannot see.

This is demonstrably untrue in a strict sense.

If I pick up my keys and put on my boots, my pet dog starts running around and panting because he anticipates a walk. He doesn't see a walk, but he has formulated a belief based on abstraction and expectation from prior concrete experiences.

Now you may say that you're using "see" in a broad way--they have to have some sense experience to recall a prior phenomenon (e.g. condition in the vein of Pavlov) and that's probably what you mean, but it's important to note that non-human animals can have abstract beliefs, even if those beliefs are based on prior concrete sense experience.

That having been said, I suppose it's not clear what is meant by "thinking" in the OP's question, as we also know that non-human animals have dreams, which are purely mental fabrications, of course. These thought processes do not require language. And least someone say that they require sense experiences of some kind, we also know that fetal animals dream. It may well be the case that they have some kind of sense experience (I have to admit my ignorance here), but intuitively, I would think that they don't.

TIL Miles Davis was invited to a White House dinner by Ronald Reagan. During dinner, Nancy Reagan turned to him and asked what he'd done with his life. Straight-faced, Davis replied: "Well, I've changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?" by lankowankoin todayilearned

Saying his life experiences did not leave him with any anger when he first started is a bit over reaching.

Sure. I'm glad I didn't say it. Using a quotation that explicitly says "we shouldn't distrust whites" as some kind of proof that he did distrust whites is also overreaching.

Is there a map of the various Wikipedias? by sniftyin wikipedia

I think you'll have to use the blank world map and start going through the subdomains. I'm interested in seeing how this will play out with Spain or India.

I'm pretty sure this does not exist, but you want a map that highlights (e.g.) the United Kingdom for en.wp, Spain for es.wp and gl.wp and ca.wp, etc.?

Facebook's Gay Advertisements by usernamegeneric1223in atheism

[–]koavf 2 points3 points ago

Sure, but there are constant political messages on here and they're all anti-conservative and the users of this subreddit are disproportionately American and interested in American topics, so that translates into being anti-Republican.

MLK comes to mind.

I don't have a beef with him, but he did say things that shouldn't be said and was sometimes violent, which is wrong. If he was the worst person ever, that would be a very fine world and it's not fair to characterize him entirely as a hot-headed bigot, but I'm giving context to the fact that other stories like this have been traded around for decades about him.

I know that. Everyone has preferences, but not everyone has refinement. reddit used to be better than it is now and it can be again.

Thanks for that! Even if Davis was a bigot or prejudiced, even that is a simplistic narrative. He was not a monster and certainly was amongst the most talented musicians ever.
