The impact moment makes me cringe every time...

The whole sequence is less than a second in actual time. Poor Katey had no idea what was about to hit her as you can tell from her genuine horror.... We used gloss paint to get the right effect but it meant the dress, shoes and underwear were a write off and the other girls had to scrub Katey with spirits and hose her down (naked) for about 20 mins to get all the paint out of everywhere... Hell, that's a whole other movie. Sorry Katie, I hope you know it was worth it ;) We were using a $120,000 Vision Research Phantom HD slow motion camera shooting to a 120 gig ram stack at 1000frames per second, the lens was a 50mm Carl Zeiss Planar T* f1.4 at F2.

Now where is that follow up video...

Agreed, in the UK and most of Europe I would not hesitate to approach a member of the police force and ask for help/directions/assistance.

After reading stories on Reddit and watching news/tv/youtube, on my last trip to NYC I in all seriousness stayed the fuck away from the few policemen/women that I met. The thought of actually interacting with them, hell no :/

Makes me sad to see this country of dreams become this seemingly nightmarish place.

This is just horrible and I am so sorry that it happened to you. Maybe you could consider talking to someone about this though, someone qualified that can help you work through it.

Edit: Sorry, nothing even remotely as bad has ever happened to me and I am not qualified to give you advice. Just that damn switch going off in my male brain that tries to fix every problem or bad situation I see.

Agreed, what I don't like about the photorealism is that it is all about technique but seems completely void of thought or feelings.

Well put.

In the recent years I have come to terms my own limitations as a left brain thinker when it comes to things that can be classified as softer and more emotional (i.e. more right brained). Among those is art in its many forms.

It is strange and hard to explain. But there is a hard-to-cross chasm between these two aspects of our minds. I think Jill Bolte Taylor put it best.

However the engineers/scientists/logical thinkers can still relate as to a non expert a bridge is just a bridge although it might be painted in a pleasing colour. But to an expert engineer the same bridge might be a work of art due to complexity that is invisible to the untrained, inexperienced eye.

If you're willing to, then I'm genuinely interested in knowing what you specifically thought about it.

I myself walked past this paintings as I did most of the paintings in the gallery that day. Later I found myself standing in front of it waiting for my wife and since I didn't have anything else to do I stared at it.

First reaction was mostly "Meh, I could paint that". Then after staring at it for a while it got a little bit more interesting as I started wondering which one of the zips the artist began by painting. My thinking was very analytical in what coats would have to follow which to make each zip colour and its depth while still retaining the over all even red of the painting etc. The longer I stared at it the more of those "zips" became apparent. I then thought for a brief second that I noticed a pattern in the spacing of the zips and their "depth" in the painting. I was completely engrossed in studying this painting and trying to figure it out when my wife finally collected me more than half an hour later.

Although I'm not sure that I have any of those fancy shmansy feelings or words for that painting as all those art experts and reviewers and I honestly think that I could paint something similar, I still enjoyed that painting immensely and the time spent pondering it.

Maybe that is art? Perhaps it is not about any one message.

The obligatory relevant anecdotal story:

Guy walks into a bar. Sees the painter Franz Kline sitting down with a beer and says, "Hey Franz, just came from the new Barnett Newman show."

Kline says, "Oh yeah? What did you think? I haven’t seen it yet."

Guy says, "You know, it seemed pretty simple, just a bunch of paintings with lines."

Kline says, "Huh. These paintings… all the same color?"

Guy says "No."

"These paintings, they all the same size?"

Guy says "no."

"How about those lines? They all the same color? same size? same placement?"

Guy says, "No."

Kline says “sounds pretty damned complicated to me.”

The lower painting is "Vir Heroicus Sublimis" painted by Barnett Newman in 1950–51. It is part of the permanent collection in MoMA in New York.

Some background about the artists and this work from MoMA. Collector Ben Heller talks about the painter.

I saw this painting when I visited NYC last year. I am not a big artistic type (left brained kind of guy) and most art flies right over my head. This painting however left an impact on me if only because of its sheer scale and how all that red coloured surface engulfs you when you stand in front of it. One of those things that needs to be seen in person to really experience.
