My first batch of rainbow carrots. by StuperousFunkerin gardening

Awesome, these look great! I grew a rainbow batch last year and loved them. I like the flavor differences between the colors.

Pedals by noservice4youin FixedGearBicycle

Origin-8 Pro Track Light Pedals, All City Crayton (Steel) Clips, Leather Double Straps.

I use this for commuting and riding around town. It feels as close as you can get to clipless in street shoes. I feel solidly locked in and can crank/pull all day without any give. I love the feel of the double straps; much more secure than singles. You do need slimmer shoes, and if your outsole has any tread it will catch on the pedal on entering or exiting.

Endless dirt roads is one reason why I love living in Vermont. by wickedcoldin bicycling

[–]forestfriend 2 points3 points ago

Your bike is beautiful. Also, I'm surprised I haven't run into you on the roads around here. I'm right in Burlington but ride down and around Shelburne Pond when I have time for a longer cruise. Yeah Vermont!

Patagonia Advocates are pretty awesome. Super lightweight, you're basically barefoot. They pack down incredibly flat and are nice for letting your feet stretch out and move.

Radioactive Wolves - episode of Nature about wildlife in the Zone. by bob_bobersonin stalker

[–]forestfriend 2 points3 points ago

Very cool video. It's pretty interesting that humans pushing the boundaries of technology and disregarding nature ended up backfiring and creating a unique place for these animals to thrive in our absence. The irony of that is awesome.

$12 to $17 million to repair the bike path by dropkickninjain burlington

[–]forestfriend 1 point2 points ago

Nice link, more people should read this and see how the estimates were made. It may seem high but it's something that brings money to Burlington and helps to get people outside and off their asses.

I'd love to see the path be made two feet wider, there are too many people walking side-by-side, totally oblivious to the things around them. I use the path 5 days a week on my commute and I was spoiled having the entire thing to myself for the last 4 months of "winter." Now I have to share it again with masses of people. /rant

Miro wins mayoral race by hectorwcin burlington

Early Results

Wanda got smoked and Wright didn't make nearly as much of an impact as I thought he was going to. I figured it would be much closer.

It's nice to see the overall direction people in Burlington voted in. Yes to increasing the school budget, yes to both advisory questions, approving the TIF, etc... It's nice to live in a city where so many other people think along the same lines - and not have those lines be backward or misguided.

Back Brakes? by pooplighterin FixedGearBicycle

[–]forestfriend 2 points3 points ago

B for me. I'll be switching to a single, front brake in the spring but I'm not in any rush to unwrap and re-tape my bars. Not losing any performance by having it sitting back there.

A little snow on a Sunday ride by forestfriendin FixedGearBicycle

[–]forestfriend[S] 1 point2 points ago

Burlington, VT. We've had an incredibly light winter this year, almost no snow. Bought studded tires to continue commuting all year but I've barely gotten to put them to use. Kind of hard to complain though.

Who else uses Mint.com or similar personal finance? by h2g242in Frugal

Same here, I like forcing myself to go over every transaction to understand what I'm spending on. Plus it lets me do any sort of number crunching that I want when I bring it into OpenOffice Calc.

Burlington Mayoral Race 2012 by forestfriendin burlington

[–]forestfriend[S] 1 point2 points ago

I think I'll be giving Miro my vote. Wanda seems like a non-factor. Between Kurt and Miro, I like the young, business and development-minded approach. He seems to have a decent background to base his plans on and I like the way he carries himself as an educated (somewhat) young professional.

Camel's Hump to Mount Mansfield via The Long Trail, VT by forestfriendin CampingandHiking

[–]forestfriend[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I thought Forest City > Long Trail to the summit was way more intense than anything I've done on Mansfield. Some parts of that seem almost vertical, but it makes reaching the top feel amazing. I like coming down Burrow's after the climb, much more relaxing. I could see it being a bit troublesome coming down the south side hahahah.

Great, thanks for the advice. I'm fine waiting until later in the year for some nicer weather. And it's definitely helpful hearing the pace you were able to hold through this area. I'm in good shape but I'm not a machine, so it's good to hear a distance I can expect to achieve.

I can see waiting until summer for the lighter load making sense - I've been up the south side of Camel's Hump and it's definitely not something I'd enjoy doing with a heavy load.

I guess it would be possible to stop at Bamforth Ridge the first night and Puffer the second. It would save me 8 miles the first day but make for an 18ish mile second day which could be rough. We could always see how we're feeling part-way through the first leg and decide from there though.

That is crazy if they're able to pull that off in one push! I looked into their schedule but they only have the 2011 calendar up for now. I'll keep them in mind as a resource and see if they've got any info as well. Thanks!

Worrying about gadget thievery at work by glassesmaxin bicycling

If I can take it off my bike relatively easily, anyone else can too. I take anything removable with me when locking up my bike, but I'm able to bring my bike into work with me so it isn't a daily occurrence.

Judge Rules that Yankee Power Can't Be Shut Down by ducttape36in vermont

It's scary that as citizens of this state, we're legally unable to shut down a facility which has had so many safety concerns. How are they able to continue operating without the support of the state?
