What is the most computer illiterate thing you've witnessed? by Peppe22in AskReddit

[–]RandomHigh 0 points1 point ago

I've seen the aftermath of someone using CC instead of BCC for a bulk e-mail that went to over 500 people, and accidentally starting a reply all back and forth that went on for over a year.

What myths about health/body are people the most stubborn about holding on too, despite the lack of any evidence to support them? by BriMcCin AskReddit

[–]RandomHigh 37 points38 points ago

Actually, there is some truth in this.

Staring at objects that are close for long periods of time can deteriorate your vision when trying to focus on distant objects. This happens because of a lack of use in the muscles you use to focus your vision.

Also, when staring at close up objects for long periods of time people tend to blink far less than they would normally, causing dry eyes.

Combine the two problems and a few years, and yes, staring at objects close up will damage your eyes. (albeit slowly over a long period of time)

Solution? If you work with computers a lot or a similar environment, take a minute or two every hour to focus on something in the distance.

Using a program like f.lux couldn't hurt either.

One of the few things that does matter is the amount of processed carbohydrates.

Eating a carbohydrate heavy diet for a long period of time is not good for your body, and can eventually lead to diabetes.

I cannot stand jokes that are about Australia being upside down or us all being bogans. What is one kind of joke that you can't stand? by MrFortin AskReddit

I'm drinking tea and dunking hob nobs as I type this on my phone.

Tea drinking Brits is less a joke and more of a social observation. We drink tea like Americans drink coffee.

PC Gamer can see into the future. It's everything we expected. by daveyandgoliathin gaming

[–]RandomHigh 0 points1 point ago

The thing I like about Valve isn't just that they let you have the DLC for free, it's that they also let you mod their games so that you can make your own content.

The recent DLC for Portal 2 is a prime example. Giving the customers the tools to easily make their own maps has provided the community with over 40,000 Portal 2 maps within the first week alone.

Even L4D has plenty of add on campaigns that you can download for free. l4dMaps.com

I heard rumours that they were working on a similar tool for making L4D maps, but I'm not sure if that had any weight to it.

[–]RandomHigh 13 points14 points ago

Sadly, I think you're right.

I think that companies will see other people covering their development costs by utilising projects like this and use it as an excuse not to develop any DLC at all and even do a mediocre job on the game. They can then reach out to the community to pay for development costs for DLC or a sequel.

It's been happening for years with more and more companies charging for DLC instead of releasing it for free, because they know that people will pay for it. There are still some companies who release free DLC, but they are increasingly fewer and fewer every year.

At the end of the day, games companies are still companies, and they are there to make a profit.

I think some large company will eventually try this; it's just a matter of time.

This is going to sound incredibly inhumane, but have we ever considered utilizing the organs from inmates that are on death row for transplants? by panda_assassinin AskReddit

[–]RandomHigh 5 points6 points ago

How about instead of forcing them we simply commute their sentence to life in prison instead of a death sentence if they donate an organ?

They would have to be asked right after sentencing and not be able to change their minds later on. This would be to prevent last minute conversions because a lot of prisons give extra privileges to inmates on death row.

More than 1,000 UK government staff caught snooping on citizen data -- including criminal records, social security, and medical records. by moooookyin worldnews

[–]RandomHigh 3 points4 points ago

Microsoft do a similar thing with Xbox live.

If you are paying by credit or debit card that has since expired and have not turned auto renew off, they will let you keep having Xbox live gold while they continue to try to charge your card instead of simply putting your account back down to silver while they wait for the payment to go through.

When they figure out 3 months later that they aren't getting any money, they will ban your whole account until the debt is paid. Not just lock it out to single player, either. I mean full on ban.

Once you have logged on to Xbox live to find your account has been banned, that's it, it's gone. You can't even disconnect from the internet and play single player games with that account any more, and any DLC or maketplace content you paid for is now unusable*.

The only way to unlock this is to pay off what you owe, but now you have to pay 3 months at a per month rate, which is usually far more expensive than what you were paying for the whole year.

(*There are two licenses when you purchase content from Xbox live; a gamertag license, and a console license. The content may still work on a different gamertag if it was downloaded to that same console.)

What would you do? by wolfenit415in Steam

[–]RandomHigh 1 point2 points ago

Don't trade in your games at any shop like gamestop, they will give you very little money and definitely not what the game is worth.

Have a little patience and sell the games on eBay or craigslist over the course of a week or two. Then use all that money you just made to upgrade your rig or save some money for the Steam summer sale.

You may as well wait for the Steam summer sale.

Why The Star Trek Universe is Secretly Horrifying by reyqunein scifi

[–]RandomHigh 9 points10 points ago

Strikes me as terribly argued, loosely based, and poorly put together.

It really does feel like they are scraping the bottom of the comedy barrel here and stretching the premise so thin that it broke after 5 seconds.

Every one of their points was not very well thought out at all. It feels like this was written at the last minute because they didn't have anything else to put out, and knew that simply doing something, anything, about Star Trek would pull in some cheap page views from the fans lining up to tell them so.

Looking for Portal 2 costum maps of filetype .vpk. by Brezicin PortalMaps

[–]RandomHigh 0 points1 point ago

Actually, I don't think you understand it. That website my friend so kindly linked you to has many files that will work on a cracked copy of Portal 2.

However, I for one will not help pirates in this sub reddit, and as such, this post has been removed.

I suggest you learn how to use cracked software before accusing others of not reading your post. I also suggest you pay for the game, and until you do, you are not welcome here.

They came back from the pub and were arguing, can't remember exactly what but I think he said it was about what they were having for dinner.

He went to have a piss and she followed him into the bathroom holding a vegetable knife that she had been using to peel potatoes.

He said something like "Can't you see I'm having a piss? Get back in the kitchen woman!"

And that's when she stabbed him.

Because I don't spend 24 hours a day on reddit and have just got home.

When I left, my previous comment had been there for about 30 minutes and got 2 up votes, and I left it at that.

Yes, she got prison, 6 months. She was out in 4 months.

What happened to her?

She died from a heroin overdose in 2002.

What happened to him? He moved back up to Scotland to be closer to some of his family. I haven't talked to him in years.

The #F4F tag is for people who would like to trade feedback on their maps. It's a signifier that if you provide feedback for a map for someone else, that they will be willing to do the same for one of your maps.

I don't see a problem with people using multiple tags. I will add the reddit tag in the sidebar now.

Friend of mine stuck his dick in crazy, lost a kidney in a kitchen related argument.

Luckily the knife was a small vegetable knife, so it wasn't too wide or long, but it was long enough to get him right in the kidney.
