13:06:54.022 BN - FACEBOOK SHARES DROP BELOW $38/SHR IPO PRICE :FB US by plopalot2in investing

[–]DarthContinent 0 points1 point ago

I advertised a few months ago, at the time I used CPC, I didn't notice whether CPM was still being offered.

I just meant to say that each click is income for Facebook, that's all; regardless of whether the clicks come from legitimate customers or potential shills.

Speaking of which, coming from a web programming background myself, it's relatively easy to develop or get someone to develop a program that can do what I describe, probably cheaper than going to the trouble of hiring a bunch of third worlders to point and click. It might be easy for Facebook to determine where the clicks are originating from, but even so, it seems in their best interest to simply turn the other cheek and accept advertisers' payments rather than go out of their way to enforce fair play among advertisers vying for the users' eyes.

CPC might be superior to CPM in that the former gets a sale or "conversion" through deliberate action on the part of the user viewing the ad, whereas the latter is just counting how many times the ad is displayed to users regardless of what they do. In any case it may be moot as Facebook may no longer offer CPM as an option.

Regardless, if you're an advertiser, every click on your ad becomes money you pay to Facebook.

And if you have either a horde of third-world "employees" cheap to keep or sufficient programming skills to create a bot which a) picks a random proxy server to obtain a random IP address and b) automagically targets and clicks your competition's ads, you can eat up your competition's advertising budget. Just because something hasn't been heard of doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been done; indeed, it may be so useful that its publicity would be counterproductive.

They make money in part by getting people to pay every time somebody clicks on ads, similar to Google AdWords.

Facebook offers CPM (cost per thousand impressions if I remember correctly, basically a joke; you pay a certain bid amount for every 1000 impressions, in fact they may've phased this method out) and CPC (cost per click). CPC is the more practical method from what I've seen, and the cost can vary anywhere from as little as $0.01 to as much as $10 each click.

Either method can be tailored to certain demographics like gender, age, likes, regions, even employers. When you create an ad, you get presented with a default minimum bid value per click which determines whether your ad will be displayed; this could be called voodoo as the minimum needed might change in short order, and for all we know the formula could change on a whim and bump up per click costs based on unseen factors. Ad categories for which there's a lot of competition means you'll be paying more to get your ad visible.

It's critical for advertisers to carefully choose keywords and demographics, so that ads don't uselessly show up for users unlikely to click, otherwise it's money down the drain every time such a user clicks. Also, for many tech-savvy users who use AdBlock and similar browser add-ons, the ads may never be seen. Plus, if you happen to be in a highly competitive industry, who knows, maybe some of your competition is outsourcing overseas to click your ads and thereby drive your advertising costs up, so that you'll reach your daily budget for clicks faster and once that happens, your ads no longer appear, leaving the door open for the competition.

Therefore Facebook really doesn't make money off plain old users, they make the lion's share off advertisers who try to catch the eye of relevant users and potentially make them into customers.

Appears to be described here:

Capital punishment in Mongolia

Capital punishment remains in force in Mongolia, one of 58 countries (out of 197) listed by Amnesty International as maintaining the death penalty in practice. The method of execution is a bullet to the neck.

Five crimes remain liable to the death penalty: "terrorist acts committed for political purposes; terrorist acts against representatives of a foreign State for political purposes; sabotage; premeditated murder committed with aggravating circumstances; and rape with aggravating circumstances". Only men aged between 18 and 60 at the time of the crime may be executed; women are not subjected to the death penalty. The government has considered abolishing the death penalty for all crimes except premeditated murder with aggravating circumstances.

Amnesty International reports that Mongolia -like China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore- practices executions in secrecy. The family of the prisoner is not informed of the date of the execution, nor of the place of burial. 45 people were sentenced to death in 2007, but the number of executions was not revealed by the authorities. Five people are thought to have been executed in 2008.

In June 2009, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, an abolitionist, was elected President of Mongolia. He began using his prerogative of pardon to prevent the application of the death penalty. On January 14, 2010, he announced that he would, henceforth, systematically use his prerogative to pardon all persons sentenced to death. He stated that most countries in the world had abolished the death penalty, and that Mongolia should follow their example; he suggested that it be replaced with a thirty year prison sentence. The decision was controversial; when Elbegdorj announced it in Parliament, a significant number of represesentatives chose not to give the applause customarily due after a presidential speech.

Thus, at present, Mongolia has a moratorium on the death penalty. Le Monde, however, noted that President Elbegdorj "may find it a lot more difficult" to have the death penalty abolished in law, adding that the death penalty might be applied again if Elbegdorj failed to be reelected.

Nonetheless, on January 5, 2012, "a large majority of MPs" adopted a bill that aims to abolish the death penalty.

For me there are several reasons.

  1. A reasonable search prior to submitting didn't return any hits at the time.

  2. My facebook friends shared this one with me.

  3. I didn't happen to notice it already made the front page of the subs I submitted it to.

  4. A repost to somebody may be brand new to somebody else.
