My new webshow Connecting With Comics is out! What do you think /r/comicbooks? by Comicspediain comicbooks

[–]Comicspedia[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks! That was my first impression too when I saw the final product. I will suggest more comic panels, or at least more visuals coming in if you think that would help too. We have an awesome couple of guys in our web studio who do great work.

It looks like it's still being researched at the moment, so no public version yet. But very interesting early results!

I don't know, seems like a mighty fine list to me. I would rearrange the order a bit though (top 10 only):

  1. The Dark Knight
  2. Watchmen
  3. Batman Begins
  4. Avengers
  5. X-Men
  6. Iron Man
  7. V for Vendetta
  8. Superman
  9. Spider-Man
  10. Batman Forever

Probably a really common question by Elementlegenin comicbooks

I second Daredevil, although I'd suggest getting it from the beginning since it isn't too far in. But don't feel like you have to if that might deter you from checking it out.

Ultimate Spider-Man had been very entertaining, though I only read the first 4 or 5 issues. I'm also more of a DC guy.

Seriously, Batman deserves more credit than this. Also, I better get this question right. by Sheriff_Twinkiein funny

I just put this question on a final for my psychology course:

Who was a major theorist in Humanistic psychology?

Carl Rogers

Edward Nigma

Harvey Dent

Barbara Gordon

Half the class got it right, the other half split their answers between Nigma and Dent.

Yeah, it was a bit surprising to read that to say the least.

I teach intro to psych at a junior college, and I have a course requirement of writing a 1-2 page journal each week containing your thoughts about what we talked about in class, or anything at all related to psychology.

The first week, I got one from a student who went on a rant about how psychology is hardly science, and that it makes him sick (yes, sick) to know that we psychologists are out there scamming people out of money and conducting invalid research.

Thankfully, he withdrew from the course before he could earn his F. Not saying I'd fail him for having that perspective, but that I'd imagine it would be quite difficult to pass a class against which you have such intensely strong views.

250 people were asked to draw where they felt different emotions in their bodies by carrotsaredangerousin psychology

I "made" some art out of these and have them up in my office. I've got the colors, words, and drawings you see in this link that are associated with anger, love, and sadness in three frames. Pic

It's a GREAT conversation piece for clients, especially since I don't have the specific emotions labeled on to the frames.

I used to live in Naperville, IL, within walking distance of Graham Crackers. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and their selection was amazing, especially back issues. Their independent wall could have used a bit more, but with 9 stores and a huge online selection, it didn't really matter if one store was lacking in anything.

I moved to South Dakota for a year and continued giving Graham Crackers my business because of their courteousness, low shipping cost ($5 flat up to 12 comics ain't bad!), and because access to comics in SD is a joke. When I emailed GC telling them I was moving to Charlotte, NC, the owner gave me a personal recommendation for a comic book shop to transfer my business to, which was nice, except the staff at the new place really rubbed me the wrong way.

I brought a subscription list of 30+ comics to Heroes Aren't Hard to Find in Charlotte, NC. I tried contacting the owner and talking to the staff about how I use comics in my therapy practice, and I got some major cold shoulders. Suddenly, the conversation was always super brief and they didn't really seem interested in connecting with me. The owner never returned my emails either offering to bring lunch by for him and his staff.

So now I have my business at Rebel Base Comics & Toys here in Charlotte. The owner and his staff are nice and talkative, and even chat with my 3 year old son when I bring him in. They said they love what I do with comics, and even put up one of my fliers advertising my services! One of the other clinicians at my practice wrote a comic book about a kid with Asperger's, and while Heroes said they wanted nothing to do with it, Rebel Base put up a stack on their New Release wall and they sold out in a week. I don't know, despite being only one store, maybe Heroes gets so much business that they have to say No more often than Yes at this point, given they run a hugely successful and popular convention in Charlotte every year. Rebel Base, on the other hand, is smaller but I think is therefore much easier to connect with. Although Graham Crackers was huge and they gave excellent one-on-one attention, so who knows.

I saw the post on reddit earlier this morning, so I got right to typing to help balance out the "violent video games are bad!" message that's undoubtedly going to be on the news for the next week or more.

Too many parents buy their kids video games without even looking into them first. There are SO many great internet resources out there that will spell out the details of games in terms of content and recommended age, but not enough people know about them. Or, sadly, some parents don't take the time to look into it even if they do know about the resources.

Not a lot of people know about this resource. For you grad students/post docs out there studying for the licensing exam, there are already thousands of user-created flash cards and hundreds of various tests, games, and other study materials that can be a great supplement to whatever else you're using.

Great to hear! I know it might sound a bit like a back-handed compliment, but a lot of people tell me both how much they loved the movie, and how surprised they were that they hadn't even heard about it before I mentioned it. Thanks for answering my question.

Big fan of all your work! We met briefly after your talk at the University of Illinois back in 2005, and I've really enjoyed all your projects since and including Super Size Me.

Can you comment on the results of The Greatest Movie Ever Sold? I'm a psych professor and I showed it to all my classes to generate discussion on neuromarketing, primary reinforcers (fear, craving, sex, as it's described in the movie), the psychology of advertising, and so on. I've also shown it to other psychologists and friends.

Probably the most frequently-asked question I've been asked have been about whether the movie met its intended goal financially. Along those lines, I also get asked how that goal has resulted in you/your company receiving funding or not receiving funding from the partner companies.

Thanks again for all the great work!

Ha, I guess we commented around the same time on Eagleman's work. I'll delete my comment and drop the two links you don't have into this one:

YouTube video highlighting his work on time perception and Synesthesia

According to his lab's page at the Baylor College of Medicine (source), "By measuring their speed of information intake, we have concluded that participants do not obtain increased temporal resolution during the fall -- instead, because memories are laid down more richly during a frightening situation, the event seems to have taken longer in retrospect. Details can be found in Stetson, Fiesta, Eagleman (2007)."
