IAMA request: A scientologist (self.IAmA)
submitted 8 months ago by [deleted]
I think it'd be really neat to be able to ask a scientologist questions.

Good.
Be prepared to hear the Clear Cognition (You mocked up your own Reactive Mind)
The OTVIII Cognition (You mocked up your own past lives)
And the RTC is squirreling the Tech.
You're gonna have to wake up sooner or later, the rest of us are waiting for you.
[–]Persian_Muse 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Awesome, please do.
[–]3danimator 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
If you think you are going to get a straight answer from this guy, you are very very wrong. This IAMA is totally and utterly pointless.
[–]aXenoWhat 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
I would be quite interested to find out what the creed of scientology is. You can walk into a church or a mosque or a synagogue and they'll tell you what they believe in. Even Zoroastrians TRY to explain.
[–]alcakd 4 points5 points6 points 8 months ago
Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

[–]Flipguarder11 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
meh, I used to be a scientologist, but that was several years ago.
[–]P00P3RB0WL 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
When most scientologists are interviewed they are usually very closed off to any questions. When asked about the E-meter they will usually just say "i dont know what you are talking about" and give you a blank stare. If they are asked about the people tortured for apostasy or homosexuality they will usually do the same. Do not trust scientologists. Hopefully this will be a better experience... fingers crossed.
[–]dvdov 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Why would anyone familiar with reddit want to do this? They should know it would just people calling them crazy and having a huge anti-religious circlejerk.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
I didn't request that they be familiar with reddit :)
[–]theninth 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
I haven't really been a redditor for that long, but every single Scientologist IAMA I've seen has consisted of people immediately asking them to explain some of the beliefs or how much money they've given the "church," OP clamming up, and the IAMA dying within minutes.
That said, best of luck.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
maybe there could be a heavily moderated one with questions only being asked once and no trolling?
(maybe I'm wishing for unicorns that ride rainbows)
[–]ootw_221 8 points9 points10 points 8 months ago
You are a Request: A fictional fringe minority hyped up by the media.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 months ago
I have no idea what that means.
[–]prosh 6 points7 points8 points 8 months ago
YOU ARE A REQUEST
[–]gabbarS 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
I did naaath. Oh hi request.
This guy
[–]RacialSlurpee 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
Would probably get more luck, or at least more honest and interesting information if you asked for an ex-scientologist AMA. As others have pointed out, you won't get much of interest from people in the "church", as they are either too low level to know much, or too high level to want to discuss it. IF they were willing to do an AMA at all, that is.
I would love to hear an ex-scientologist AMA, but it would be a very different thing.
Asking potentially disgruntled ex church members for unbiased answers would be like asking a current scientologist what was wrong with their beliefs.
Plus, ex scientologists are a dime a dozen, I want to hear real answers from a current one.
[–]Katalysts 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
I often have nightmares about Scientology.
[–]SlapHappyDude 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
My high school girlfriend's father was a former Scientologist and still got literature mailed to their house. This was in the late 90s when wikipedia didn't exist yet and we didn't all have instant access to all kinds of "WTF" material, so it was pretty amazing for me flipping through glossy pages showing various home e-readers for sale.
I'm not sure he was ever super serious about it though... I think he only cleared the first (cheap) level before deciding it was all just a moneymaking scam.
[–][deleted] 8 months ago
we had an couple recent scientologist AMAs recently, one or two were hoaxes, one guy only answered a few questions and then stopped.
I'm sure it would be great if you did an AMA, be prepared for a lot of stupid questions and mean spirited remarks, but some people are just curious and want to here what you think and feel.
:)
If a person has beliefs they should be willing to discuss them, they should have a desire to clear up misunderstandings. Just about every other religion has had a member do an AMA.
[–]jma1 5 points6 points7 points 8 months ago
My father was a scientologist for many years. Let me tell you a bit about them: They are either kept blissfully ignorant in the lower ranks, or they will tell you nothing about what they have been "taught", if in the upper ranks. The whole Xenu/Thetans thing doesn't come into play until later levels of the religion.
In other words, you'll probably not get a genuine response from someone who wants to be a scientologist apologetic, unless officially from the CoS.
[–]Happy_Gaming 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
I would like to see that but they tend to be private with their beliefs which I can support.
I totally respect if they choose to be private, I'd like to ask questions, but it's not wrong for them to not want to put themselves out there.
[–]cannonball1895 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
there used to be a bunch of scientology stuff on wikileaks...
[–]Medic_Mouse -4 points-3 points-2 points 8 months ago
Watch South Park. All your questions will likely be answered, as they explain pretty much the entire belief system. Otherwise, you're not entitled to information because you haven't paid for it and your thetan levels aren't high enough or some shit.
[–]Silver_Foxx 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
You are a complete idiot if you glean all your information on Scientology from a single episode of a satire series. . .
[–]socket0 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
Read everything you can find on Scientology. Then come back and apologize for knocking South Park's surprisingly accurate summary of this nonsense.
[–]Silver_Foxx -2 points-1 points0 points 8 months ago
I have read shitloads on the subject. I was a major proponent during the anti-Scientology protests that swept North America years back. South Park only touched on one aspect of Scientology (And really, how is what THEY believe any crazier than any OTHER religion?) South Park also failed to touch on many of the subjects that ACTUALLY make Scientology an evil cult. Did they talk about the Sea Corps? Did they talk about the forced disassociation with non believing relatives?
[–]socket0 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Clearly the South Park episode wasn't intended as a documentary, and clearly it wasn't intended as a complete overview of the idiocy and evils of Scientology. But what they did include wasn't factually incorrect, just inconvenient for the Scientologists.
And they're certainly not any more idiotic than most other religions, which also get their fair share of scorn in South Park.
upvote for all caps
[–]timoneer 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
the Sea Corps
The Sea Org. For someone who has "read shitloads on the subject," you seem lacking in some fundamentals.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 months ago
I love South Park, but their info is sensationalized and iffy at best.
Their mormon stuff acts like every mormon believes the fundamentalist extremist views that actually very few (about 500 out of 14 million) believe.
[–]IsaakCole 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
That's the thing, what you see on South Park for that one episode at least is the real deal with Scientologist. I've can't tell you how many hours I've spent reading testimonials from past Scientologists, and it corroborates everything on that episode.
I know it sounds crazy, but Scientology is a cult. Make no mistake about it.
I'm not saying they're not, though I think the term cult is thrown around a lot nowadays. I'm justsaying that when I've fact checked south park they pick and choose the sensatiolist bits and often kinda miss the key elements.
I want to know how it feels to be a scientologist, what their take on a wide variety of subjects are.
[–]IsaakCole 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
Understandable, though I think the cult label is well earned here considering their history of forcing members to cut off ties with the outside world, forcing dependence on the church, it's ear worship of Hubbard and of course the numerous cases of fraud, murder, and extortion.
on the list of "cult features" they definitely can check off a bunch....
Ear worship? They don't have an icky old shriveled hubbard ear do they?
Whoops, did not see this till just now. That ear bit was a typo haha
[–]Medic_Mouse 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
You're correct about the mormon episode, but their musical The Book of Mormon would be a more accurate description of the standard Mormon belief structure. Their scientology episode , for a few minutes at least, is pretty straight forward as to their beliefs.
As soon as someone says "standard mormon belief structure" it loses accuracy. The mormons are an extremely diverse group ranging from existentialists that are closest to Buddhists to ones that are basically right wing fundamentalists
I have encountered mormons that say "taking the bible literally is missing the point" I have seen mormons who were openly gay and accepted as such, as well as homophobic assholes who attempted to use religion to back bigotry
Much of the basic mormon history as seen by the public is pretty different than the range of beliefs encompassed.
Take the "golden plates" which BTW are currently kept in utah and are seen by many modern mormons to be a kind inspirational native american history that was mistranslated and by others to be a magic work of god.
without being deep into the lds and being open minded enough to ask hard questions and demand answers, you will be only handed the standard discussions which the (awesome) creators of south park turned to a musical but which only a portion of mormons give more than lip service.
The same could be said of Christianity and several other religions, but there is still a base belief structure.
true, definitely.
[–]timoneer 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
the "golden plates" which BTW are currently kept in utah and are seen by many modern mormons
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
After Joseph Smith said he translated them, Smith said he returned the plates to their angelic guardian who took them back to heaven (or whatever).
They are most assuredly NOT in Utah, and are NOT seen by modern mormons.
They are most definitely in utah, I forget the name of the facility, it's the big one where many of the important texts, stores etc are kept. I know a few of the folks involved in the security there. Know the right people, ask the right question, and you can find out about them, though I doubt they'll let you look at them.
They are allowed to be seen by few folks, but far from none
The "return" has been explained as "the right to further gather sacred knowledge from them was rescinded"
No, they're not.
You're an idiot.

yay?
[–]toquenbrew 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
They'll have to get "daddy's" permission first.

didn't find one, didn't look too hard, but looked

I have a question for the many Americans. You [Americans] preach of freedom and glorify the whole spread of freedom. This country was founded on the idea of Freedom of Religion. Why is it that so many people want to picket outsde of Scientology churches and constantly abuse people who aren't hurting anyone and believing in got own faith? What business is it ours whether or not they believe the same thing you do. Many people in US don't believe Jesus is the Christ, but you don't crucify them as much as you do to Scientologists...why?
It is a vocal minority that speaks out against religious groups, and reddit hosts a seeming majority of said minority. The minority does not experience faith of any sort, has never seen anything beyond them and so dismiss it like a child dismisses their parent's sex life.
That's why I'd like to see an AMA by a scientologist, there would be a lot of trolls, but maybe there would be some real discussions too.
[–]RandomExcess 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
Do Scientologists eat the body or drink the blood of their Savior? #LookingAtYouChristians
the sacrament is only believed to actually be the meat and juice of a 2,000 year old dead guy by, I think catholics, I don't think many if any christians believe in transubstantiation
[–]kleptobismol -2 points-1 points0 points 8 months ago
I agree...
[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 months ago
Do you see scientology ever becoming as big as Catholicism or Islam? and does your faith have a similar agenda/primary goal like the 'caliphate' system that Whabi Islam has?
[–]TimDave 7 points8 points9 points 8 months ago
This is a request. This is not a Scientologist.
I am not a scientologist, I merely requested one ask questions
My religion is as big as Catholicism or Islam, but it's not scientology
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 months ago
Who cares, they aren't gonna tell us anything different compared to most religions
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago*
by definition they are different, especially being the the youngest currently popular religion
