I HATE diamond commercials. They have come to represent everything I hate about humanity. I get so infuriated that any diamond commercial or billboard I see causes me to go into a verbal tirade about everything that's wrong in this world. People just look at me confusedly.

I really, really think that voting machines should be powered by open source software by mandate.
[–]xutnyl 170 points171 points172 points 2 years ago
Not just voting machines but any device used by the government, outside of the military. Radar guns? Yes! Breathalyzers? Yes! It's digital hardware owned and operated by the government and by extension We The People thanks to our taxes. From that I only feel that it's fair that we have the ability to not just view the code being used but challenge it when it it wrong.
[–]FireworksForJeffy 34 points35 points36 points 2 years ago
I hadn't ever thought of that, but it's a fantastic idea.
[–]theddman 60 points61 points62 points 2 years ago
This drives me insane. I've been ranting on this for a decade now.

This, and approval voting: "vote for one or more candidates" instead of "vote for one candidate." Plurality is a terrible system which suffers from the spoiler effect. Approval voting is incredibly simple and produces results nearly indistinguishable from a Condorcet-satisfying method. More information about this is available at http://zesty.ca/voting/sim/.
What really grinds my gears are the instant runoff voting advocates -- IRV is wildly popular as an alternative voting method, and is actually passing legislatures in California and Vermont. IRV suffers from the spoiler effect very similar to plurality - in addition, it is non-monotonic. In other words, voting for a candidate can cause them to lose the election. Details on this are also available from the above link.
[–]Oswyt3hMihtig 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Also, fusion voting, where more than one party can endorse a candidate. It was the norm throughout the 19th century, until the leaders of the two-party system banned it in basically every state (New York is a notable exception) because it worked too well in keeping the parties accountable to their constituents.
[–]MistyMountainHop 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Call me old-fashioned, but I think that we should make votes on paper.

Along the same lines of this, I'm full on for rehabilitation programs. Where I live people have this mentality that people who commit crimes must be kept locked away, far far away, and punished for life. Truth is, in my country many are locked away for extended periods of time and are paying disgustingly unproportionate sentences to the crimes they committed simply because no one cares about them or because they can not afford proper legal representation. Conditions in these holding cells are also very inhumane. Those who can pay, usually sneak the person out of the country or pay for improved conditions. Those who don't have the buck just suffer and get dragged along our poor legal system.
It also bothers me that people think all criminals engage in crime just because they want to. I live in a country with severe social inequalities and people rather vote for politicians who "promise" to lock away criminals for good instead of demand for improved social programs geared towards the poor, and integration programs to help the poor integrate into society.
There are also laws here making it illegal to employ minors. While I understand these laws were made to avoid children exploitation, our public education system is a mess and many don't get the opportunity for it. Increasing number of children are on the street begging, or engaging in crime because they need to find a way to eat. Since they can't get jobs or help from the government they end up getting in gangs and committing crimes.
It really bothers me to live in a country were a majority rather have people rot in hell than create conditions to avoid crime or help them recover.

Pull handles on push doors. I don't care if it says "Push," a pull handle is a universally recognized symbol for "pull." When I see someone pulling on one, I don't laugh at that person, I think of poor design. I would rather have no handle on a push door than a pull handle.
[–]centipeed 66 points67 points68 points 2 years ago*
This is so true. They either need to start using a flat metal plate on the push side, or make double hinges universal. Are they called double hinges? The ones that make doors swing both ways.
[–][deleted] 108 points109 points110 points 2 years ago
Haha, he said "swing both ways".

I think the doors that swing both ways would be against all kinds of building codes in most places.
[–]centipeed 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago
But they wouldn't be against any kind of AWESOME codes. And awesome codes overrule building codes, as far as I'm aware.

dealing with your psychological and personal issues BEFORE you have kids, so as to not condemn your children to a lifetime of being as crazy as you are
[–]manymolecules 91 points92 points93 points 2 years ago
On a similar note, people who have children without considering if they can provide a safe/secure/sane childhood for them drive me crazy. It seems like most people view procreating as some sort of reward for themselves--think "I want to settle down and have a family." It doesn't matter if they are in unhappy marriages, have unstable employment or are dealing with unresolved psychological issues. Children are a responsibility, not a reward for aging.
[–]liquidsimplicity 53 points54 points55 points 2 years ago*
As a personal reply to your comment - this is exactly why I'm almost 30 years old, and not having a child. My horomones are saying a huge resounding, "Yes!", my head is saying, "No". My friends and coworkers are saying, "Ohhh! Better get on that! The clock is ticking you know!" I respond, "So I can starve it, and beat it when I'm stressed?" I love children, and yes I want three, but at this point, I would not be a good, stable Mama to them.
Edit (addition): I may not end up having any :(:(:( from what seems to be happening in my life, but I'm sure as hell not going to have a child because "You're almost 30, ya know!"
[–]NegativeK 34 points35 points36 points 2 years ago
High-five for thinking of the potential kid. Tell all of your friends and coworkers that there's never a shortage of orphans if your clock stops ticking.
[–]toblotron 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Paradoxally, this probably proves that you're more qualified to be a parent than the avarage person.
There must be something wrong with this system...
[–]dogs_breakfast 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
I cannot upvote this enough. Children are lifelong projects, not a reward for reaching adulthood. If parents did their job right society would have half it's problems.
[–]mobbossmartha 42 points43 points44 points 2 years ago
I agree. I know too many people (including my own parents) who had kids without any particular plan of raising them because they thought of kids as some sort of love-generator, rather than an all-consuming, twenty-year-long chore.

SIGNAL WHEN MAKING TURNS FUCKERS
[–]meaghancls 57 points58 points59 points 2 years ago
When I was in Driver's Ed., the guy who went on practice drives with us was about 100 years old, and even if I was driving through a parking lot he would make me use my turn signal every time I turned, because, he said, "Using your turn signal is easier than picking your nose, so there's no excuse not to do it."
[–]NegativeK 29 points30 points31 points 2 years ago
Years back, I was teased for using the turn signal in my parents' driveway.
If you always use it before turning, there will never be a situation where someone wished you did.
[–]RECURSIVE_META_JOKE 39 points40 points41 points 2 years ago
Unless you're trying to merge into another lane in New Jersey or New York, in which case your turn signal lets the other driver know of your intentions so he can speed up and block you.

[–]dinx2582 105 points106 points107 points 2 years ago*
I agree. Even if I'm the only person on the road in broad daylight, I'll still signal.
As far as I'm concerned, those who frequently neglect to use their turn signal are probably just as obnoxious and selfish in other parts of life.
I wouldn't even want to add up the seconds/minutes I've lost to do some fucking asshole who couldn't bother to use their turn signal. You aren't the only one on the road, and even if you are, YOU SHOULD STILL FUCKING USE IT, AND YOU SHOULD ACTIVATE THE SIGNAL MORE THAN 10 GODDAMN FEET FROM THE TURN, ESPECIALLY WITH OTHER CARS AROUND, YOU PRICK.
EDIT: I regularly wish I was a cop who has absolutely no authority other than being able to pull over people who don't use their turn signal, and then subsequently berate them while making them as late as possible for whatever the fuck.
[–]thegreatuke 94 points95 points96 points 2 years ago

Our space program.
[–]NattyBumppo 72 points73 points74 points 2 years ago
Same here. Most people I talk to in real life just don't care, and I've heard the "we have more important problems to solve here on Earth" argument so many times that I've all but stopped trying.
[–]peanutsfan1995 59 points60 points61 points 2 years ago
I hate it when people say that. Don't they realize that so many of the problems we faced in the 50s, 60s, and 70s were solved with the- not inconsiderable- aid of the space program? Computers, health, electronics, optics, radio, television, cell phones, even bio-engineering to an extent. Without the space programs of our nation and other nations, especially the USSR, where would we be?
[–]Khiva 32 points33 points34 points 2 years ago*
Though I agree with your conclusions, I think you might actually be making the wrong arguments. We don't fund NASA because we get a great deal of ancillary benefits out of it. We fund space programs because it's about fucking space. We're talking about one of the most ancient wonders of mankind, and if someone can't see the value in uncovering its secrets then they either have no imagination or no curiosity or both. Either way, they shouldn't be voting.
The second response is that diverting the resources sent towards NASA into other programs entails absolutely no guarantee that those problems would be solved. We've shoveled billions of dollars towards international poverty reduction over the years and we've barely moved the numbers an inch.
For a teeth-grinding insight into how the other side thinks, see here.

Our education system and career/class advising for college students.
[–]Thestormo 24 points25 points26 points 2 years ago
Good career/class advising for college students. Nothing quite like being told "You're not smart enough as a freshmen to take that junior level course even if you do have all the prereqs done. Don't you see that 3 in front of the code?"
[–]gayguy 18 points19 points20 points 2 years ago
It hurts me to see so many kids change careers and underachieve because of the overwhelming or seemingly overwhelming classes they have to take.
A lot of advisors where I am are basically the "I dropped out of said field" so they actually end up discouraging students from going into that field of study. I felt like I was already a failure during my first semester at school because I wasn't doing this on top of that, etc. "Oh, well when I was a student here I didn't have time for lunch," was actually said to me because I said I couldn't handle my proposed schedule for the next semester.
I actually started a club here that does peer advising services for students and the turn out is quite large. We specifically do pre-med advising (which is specifically lacking here) and these kids come in ready to cry about "Am I volunteering enough? Am I in enough clubs?"
Which brings me to another problem which I won't discuss right now because it's finals here. Basically, pre-med has students jumping through hoops and saving the world to such a high standard that they completely forget and lose touch with why they are doing any of it. I am not putting any other career choice down by saying this but the way the system works (or appears to most) now is that you have to be some overachieving, pompous asshat in order to go to medical school. It drives me insane. You don't and that is what my club is about. College is a personal process for everyone and that is not understood by advisors who see each student as a DARS report (that's what we call our transcript that includes requirements and stuff). It is about so much more. Fitting your schedule and putting it together is one thing but so is your own personal life. I am so happy I realized this before it was too late and was able to put my life together in such a way as to make everyone happy.

Light Pollution. As in I can't see the stars at night. not light pollution, as in "a little bit"
[–]Anglachel 39 points40 points41 points 2 years ago
I live in a rural village in Belgium and even there you can barely catch a decent star filled night. In Hungary this summer I had a brilliant view of the stars every single night, truly magnificent. Almost every night I spent at least 30 minutes gazing at the stars.
Light pollution kills so much beauty...
[–]keyboardsmash 54 points55 points56 points 2 years ago
Lighting up adverts should be illegal. Lighting up buildings when no one is in them should be illegal. No burglar is going to think that no one is in a school at midnight because the lights are on. And can we please, please make street lights that don't send light above the horizontal?
[–]DefensorVeritatis 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
Absolutely. I moved from rural NC to the middle of Boston for college, and it's mostly awesome, but I miss seeing the stars so much.
Learning. It seems like most people don't give a shit to learn anything new after they've finished school. I honestly cannot comprehend how some people are satisfied in just not knowing.
[–]isiseyes 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
I teach at a state college (as a TA...I'm a grad student) and I can say that at least half of my students don't care about learning anything while IN school. Most are just there to go through the motions and get a degree. The attitude is "I paid for this class...where's my A?" What happened to the joy of discovery? I went to college to have my eyes widened and mind blown, not for the frickin piece of paper.

IRL. Science. I know reddit has a very science minded community, but when I have to be around the three dimensional people and I talk about my major (physics) or cosmology (I like talking about these things), most people just sort of go blank.
To be fair I have thought about maybe it's something that I am doing wrong. Maybe most people don't care about how big the Universe is. Or the weird force of time and how we are made of tiny tiny tiny little forms of "matter". These are the things that make me smile, that I love to talk (IRL) about. But with 90% of the people that I talk to act like they really do not care.
Edit: It makes me happy that I'm not alone in this
[–]MrSnoobs 36 points37 points38 points 2 years ago
You're definitely not doing anything wrong. I am a grad in English lit but love to talk about SCIENCE! The problem with SCIENCE! and not being a SCIENCE! graduate is that I don't get to talk at a very high level wth people. I love learning though.
SCIENCE!

Can you please be my friend IRL? :<
I'm not a physics major or anything, but I LOVE these topics and whenever I try to have a conversation about any of it, the same thing happens. Everyone just goes blank and looks at me like I'm speaking Alien, so I have to stop. It's even worse because, I like to use these topics in projects I do for school, and my professors and class don't understand. It's awful when I try to explain the idea, but the prof just says "Well I don't think anybody is going to understand that." Jesus am I the only one in there NOT thinking about bananas and shoes or whatever the hell?
Ok I'm done. But seriously, I'd love to have someone interested/ing around to talk with.
[–]weaselonfire 18 points19 points20 points 2 years ago

Thankfully, I have somehow managed to rustle out of the proverbial woodwork a small collection of real people with whom I can geek out, so long as I stick to their respective areas of interest.

That someone has not invented a road that will last 100 years (living in Michigan). With all of the computing power we have in the world no one has developed a red yellow green stop light that is smart enough to realize that no cars are coming from one way so give the green to the road that has cars waiting. We also need refrigerators that use the cold air outside (winter) instead of using the compressor all year.
[–]f2x 31 points32 points33 points 2 years ago
Oddly enough I live in the SW part of Ohio, and they seem to have taken a paradoxical approach to red lights. As you approach an intersection, the light changes red. You WILL SIT THERE until another car approaches from the other road, and the light will change to make them stop. It's really quite infuriating.

It's called a traffic light sensor - you can google it :]
They don't put it up in areas that have traffic 24/7. As far as I know.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
Most traffic sensors also don't recognize scooters/motorcycles. I've sat at a left turn signal on a busy road for 5 minutes without a change. I almost flashed my brights to turn (it's a button right next to my left handle. A simple mistake, Officer!) but a regular car pulled up right behind me, and bam. A green left turn light.

billboards. i consider them to be visual pollution, and i'd like to see zoning laws put in place such that a: no billboards allowed and b: signs for businesses would be ok, but the signage would need to be for the business that actually owns the property
if you've ever driven down the 280 in san francisco, you'll notice that it's one of the most beautiful highways in the country . . . that's because there are no billboards. conversely, the 101 is ugly as sin...with billboards aplenty

Legalizing prostitution. It's not like it's stopping anyone that it's illegal, and if it was legal the could open brothels so they wouldn't freeze to death on the streets, and start unions that would give them rights like health insurance and mandatory covered drug/STD screening.
[–]mccavity 35 points36 points37 points 2 years ago
This was an absolutely fascinating debate on the topic. There are issues and shades in the concept I never even thought of.
[–][deleted] 29 points30 points31 points 2 years ago
In my country it's legal. Hooray for boobies!
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 2 years ago
The main thing I hate about arguing this topic, as well as drugs, is that everyone assumes that you just want to get laid/high. I've never been to a prostitute and don't plan on it, and I don't use drugs (well, besides pot anyway...), but I still feel strongly about legalizing both. It's stupid that people don't want to be pro-legalization, despite it being the logical thing to do, because they are scared (as the should be) that they will be labeled as a sexual deviant or a drug addict.

Creating and maintaining good bicycling infrastructure i.e. Copenhagen/Amsterdam-style. Designed by cyclists, for all ages, flat, separate from cars. With connections to public transport.
I honestly think that cycling helps with personal health, reduces our dependence on oil and cars, reduces pollution, reduces the need for large parking lots, encourages awareness of local surroundings, potentially averts urban sprawl, helps independence: in home-leavers/students and new residents/tourists.
Unfortunately the trend with attaining wealth, is a deterioration of bicycle infrastructure (see Beijing). And in developed countries/cities, bicycles have already been squeezed out, causing resulting hostility towards cyclists.
If oil gets increasingly expensive, then bicycles will become a viable alternative. We should design our living areas towards this while we can, before we are forced into it eventually.
My other passion is for good local and intercity rail.

That we still have all of these open refrigerators in grocery stores. Would it kill us to have to open a few doors to get at things? It would save a lot of energy. Not tons, as glass isn't very energy efficient, but some.
[–]Cryptic0677 32 points33 points34 points 2 years ago
If it saved a reasonable amount, saving that energy would save the stores money, which they would want to do. Obviously the energy reduction is negligible.
[–]BioGeek 37 points38 points39 points 2 years ago
In Belgium there is a large discount supermarket chain (Colruyt) which has closed refrigerators. At each store there are large panels explaining the reason why (better protection against light, air and warmth). It saves them 3,8 million euro a year in energy savings (pdf in Dutch).
[–]Cryptic0677 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
That amazes me that more stores don't close their fridges then!

Okay, sure. This only applies while I'm at work, but seriously, equipment has a home so other people can find it. If you don't put it back where it's meant to go, I can't find it. I can't find it, I waste time trying to. The less time I waste, the sooner I can get shit done. The sooner I get shit done, the soonre I can get the fuck home, and leave you to leave shit laying around everywhere.

When viewed from this perspective, it seems to really explain things...
[–]zhongdama 37 points38 points39 points 2 years ago
It looks weird but it can easily be explained. In most universities of mainland China 30 years ago (when most of these leaders were students), the only courses offered were engineering or science. Now the curricula are a little more diverse to accommodate modern China's needs for business, finance, modern medicine, etc.; but the options are still limited by Western standards. For example, look at Tsinghua University's curricula (considered by most the best university in China).

The fact that there are still people living in slavery and being sold as slaves in the industrialized world. It infuriates me that people get up in arms over gay marriage when girls are being kidnapped from Eastern Europe and forced to work as prostitutes.
The appallingly ineffective and continually unexamined nature of our penitentiaries and prisons.
I guess that's two things. Sorry.
EDIT: Also sorry about the gay marriage inclusion. What I meant was that it infuriates me that people find gay marriage to be threatening, but not SLAVERY.

The economic pitfalls of current copyright and patent laws in the US and around much of the world. Unfortunately, most people I know barely care past lunchtime, so they don't give a flying hoot about long terms like 70 years after death...

Either.
[–]rooly 67 points68 points69 points 2 years ago*
A good and well linked source I like to follow is at http://techdirt.com
Basically, current copyright law seeks to continuously pay a producer for work they did one time, often many years ago. This makes it more of a welfare system than its (at least in the US) intended purpose of 'providing incentive for the creation of science and the arts'. It disables the creative public from consuming artistic media and producing more artistic media by putting monopolistic barriers around the simple act of re-using an idea.
Every person ought to be well aware the problems with monopolies of any sort. Unchecked monopolies on oil in the beginning of its era in Pennsylvania destroyed competition and caused arbitrary price fixing, which is a burden only on the tax-paying consumer. Monopolies in telephone with AT&T did the same thing in its day. Monopolies on an idea have the ability to be even more destructive, for the added reason that you might have to pay just to express a thought. The early founding fathers actually thought of this and placed a restriction of 'limited' monopolies for copyright and patent. The limit was intended to be a set time, set to reasonably economic limitations, and any copyrighted or patented work needed to be registered to receive protection.
As it stands, laws tend to create a 'creativity tax' that goes not to the actual artistic producer, but to a central agency that claims it will find and reimburse that artist for their work. I specifically use the word claims since just searching for 10 seconds on Google or Bing would show possibly hundreds of documented instances of this simply not being the case. Canada has a blank media 'piracy' tax, which incumbent industry wants to extend even to things like the iPod. It was just in the news this past week about how that same Canadian industry admitedly owes billions to artists it 'can't find', including names like Mariah Carrey and Bon Jovi.
Patents are the other side of the same detracting coin. A patent creates an inherrent 'entry tax' to incumbent industry as the current model stands. Patents in themselves have the capability of being quite helpful and useful, when granted properly. But in an age where Amazon can get a patent on only clicking once to purchase something from its website, you begin to see where the hazards are in its current usage. Patents are intended, from the original constitution, to be granted on 'useful' and 'non-obvious to those skilled in the trade' inventions. If you ever hear someone say, "oh my, I (a person who actually works in the field) would have never thought of that!" then that invention would have a likely incentive towards patenting.
With these both acting as taxes instead of incentives for the original creator, it causes a problem. No person will ever honestly tell you that more taxing helps creative incentive. Taxing businesses does not cause them to hire or produce more. Taxing people does not help them to live wealthier lives. Taxes are always a necessary economic evil that a government needs to operate for its intended purpose of protecting and serving the people. For a good reference to what happens when taxes are not used for protecting the people, just look at the reasons for the French Revolution.
I won't even begin to get into the problems with current language involving these two things... That is an entirely different discussion.
tl;dr, Current copyright and patent law is more like a tax on the populace than an incentive for the creator. edit This entire post is pretty much the "tl;dr" of the whole discussion...

It really does affect people's behavior subconsciously. Imagine walking down Broadway in NYC and having it be quiet of mechanized noise - an entirely different vibe would permeate the place...a better one IMO.
There are very few places in the world that you can be where there isn't the sound of airline jets flying overhead - even in the most remote of wildernesses. It's really kind of sad that human impact is that inescapable.
And people want jet-engined flying cars, so we can then all have a loud-ass airport right next door... yay.

Start your meetings on time. When you wait for people who are late, you reinforce their behavior. If they walk in and see that the meeting hasn't started yet, they'll think that you never start meetings on time. If they walk into the middle of a meeting, it will be awkward for them and they won't be late again.
